World waits for band to emerge from limbo
We are now firmly entrenched in the limbo between shows and recording. Here’s the catch 22: The more shows you play the better the record will be but we need a great record to get better shows.
If you know the answer to this riddle I will buy you a nice dinner or a drink or two.
Album Demos begin; Neighborhood warnings well received!
Dan, Joel and Nick hunkered down at Clinton St Studios last week for an intense couple hours long session of recording, playing, drinking and debating. Nick debated if Joel was using too much Jazz, Dan wanted to play everything faster, Joel tried to make Nick laugh with funny faces during especially difficult parts of songs.
You’ll have to be patient as we make this new record but I promise to add little videos of just how much fun we’re having.
Thanks to my neighbors, I promise we’ll stop early… mostly.

How to make it in the music business
I used to manage bands in my former life in San Francisco. I even taught a class about how to break into the music business. So it’s funny that lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how to make it in the music business.
Since I was last serious about “making it” online streaming has taken over from download sites. Check out Spotify or MOG or Napster.
You can also get your music anywhere with distribution from places like TuneCore.
So how do you make money at this?
Shows and merchandise are still big winners for bands that want to tour. But how are people going to hear about you 5 states away or even continents and oceans away?
The good news is that it is almost free if you have access to a computer to record and distribute a record worldwide. The bad news is that everyone else can as well. Think having a hit song is free now? Not quite – check out this great article on the cost of a hit single from NPR about Rhianna.
Now this might sound naive and it certainly is subjective but everything starts with the song and the performance. I think the recording is less important. You need to have something important to say and the melody has to be memorable. The performance has to be passionate, it doesn’t need to be perfect but please tune your instruments and sing on key. I’m a pop music fan so you should have a hook as well. Recording? Some of my favorite song were done in on a tape deck in a hotel room. (see Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska).
You also need people that want to support you and spread the word about your music and band. The best example of this is the Grateful Dead and that was all before social media, even before the internet. The process of connecting and promoting is different but the idea is the same.
Of the people I know that made it they were able to do two things:
1. Connect with people [both fans and business advocates]
2. Create great work compulsively and also conspicuously.
Write a ton of music because you never know which song will connect. Create music is a manner that allows people to be a part of the process. Connect with fans and stay in touch regularly; this is easy with email lists and blogs. Connect with the gate keepers and advocates in the business. It never hurts to have fans at radio, press, publishers and record labels.
Joel Survives Surgery
Joel Barker survived throat surgery this week. He’s home now writing in place of talking for a few more days. We kick back into pre-production this next week for our yet untitled EP.
Stick around as we figure out how to make the sounds in our heads the sounds on the computer.
I have some great photos from the hospital but I just realized they’re on Joel’s phone…
Love, Music, Heartbreak, Throat Surgery
These are the things on my mind tonight.
I watched part of the Bachelor and it brought to mind again that everyone is just looking for love. I think if love is anything it is being significant to another person in an immensely powerful way. So it’s hard to believe that all those girls are all falling in love. Maybe some people just need to feel that much that much.
Right now I’m listening to Kanye West, The Joy Formidable, and M83
I was also thinking about heartbreak lately. I’ve written albums about it, felt it, known it, made it. I never wanted to hurt anyone but every relationship I’ve had has ended one way or another.
And the throat surgery thing. Good friend and bassist Joel Barker is having his throat worked on this week. Make good thoughts and send them to him. I’m grateful for text messaging so we can still talk while he’s recovering.
My 107 year old piano
This is my 1904 Kohler and Chase baby grand piano. Lately I’ve been learning all of our new songs on this massive piece of magical mahogany, brass, ivory and cast iron. It’s amazing to me how the songs sound new and I’m able to find new parts and phrases.
I also met with a good friend and producer Ryan Hayford to talk shop, drink beer and watch the 49′ers play what might be the best football game I have ever seen. We’re picking songs now for the new EP!
